Bathtub Replacement
Whether you are restoring a family bathroom or installing a sculptural freestanding tub, the tub you choose has to suit the floor beneath it as much as the room around it.
Bathtub replacement sounds like a swap and rarely is. The tub is one of the few objects in a house that is heavy when empty, considerably heavier when full, heavier again with someone in it, and connected to both supply and waste plumbing at fixed positions. Change any of those variables and you are dealing with structure, drainage, and access, not just a fixture.
That is not a reason to avoid the project. It is a reason to plan it. A well-chosen tub, set level on adequate support with drainage that actually drains, is one of the most durable things in a bathroom. A poorly chosen one flexes underfoot, drains slowly, goes cold in ten minutes, and never quite looks like the photograph that inspired it.

What bathtub replacement actually involves
The work begins with removal, and removal is often the most disruptive hour of the whole project. Older cast iron tubs are extremely heavy and frequently cannot leave the room intact, which means they are cut apart in place. Alcove tubs are usually tiled or panelled into three walls, so those surfaces come off with them. Getting the old tub out is the point at which a bathroom stops looking like a bathroom.
With the alcove or platform open, the framing, subfloor, and drain assembly are exposed. This is where the honest condition of the installation reveals itself: water damage at the wall junctions, a subfloor softened by years of small overflows, an overflow gasket that failed long ago, or joists notched to accommodate a waste line. It is common to find that the previous tub was set directly on an uneven floor without a proper mortar bed, which is why it always creaked.
The new installation is then built from the floor up. The subfloor is repaired and levelled. The support method is chosen for the tub type: a mortar or foam bed for a heavy soaking tub, a properly built and levelled platform for a drop-in, a reinforced base for a freestanding unit. Waste and overflow are connected and tested before anything is closed in. Supply lines and the tub filler are set, and the surrounding surfaces, panels, or apron are finished last.
For freestanding tubs specifically, floor loading and filler position have to be decided before the tub arrives, not after. A floor-mounted filler needs its supply routed through the floor in exactly the right place, and the tolerance is small. This is why we resolve the tub model, the exact filler, and the setting-out dimensions during design rather than on installation day.

Why homeowners replace a bathtub
Surface failure is the most visible reason. Enamel chips and then rusts. Acrylic dulls, scratches, and yellows under the wrong cleaners. Refinished tubs — the spray-on coatings sold as a shortcut — typically look excellent for a year or two and then peel in sheets, usually starting at the drain. Once a tub surface has gone, no amount of cleaning brings it back, and the room reads as tired regardless of what else has been done to it.
Comfort is the reason people are often too embarrassed to lead with, and it is entirely legitimate. Many builder-grade tubs are shallow, short, and sloped at an angle that suits nobody. A tub you cannot actually soak in is a tub that becomes a shower base with a step. Depth, length, backrest angle, and the position of the overflow determine whether the tub is used weekly or never.
Household change drives many replacements. Families with young children want a usable, safe, easy-to-clean tub. The same family a decade later may want that second bathroom converted to a shower instead. Older homeowners often want a lower step-over height, or the tub removed entirely in favour of a curbless shower — which is a different service, though we frequently discuss both at the same visit.
Then there is design intent. A freestanding tub is the strongest single gesture available in a bathroom, and it changes the room more than any finish choice. It also demands space, structure, and correct proportion; a large tub crammed into a small room looks smaller than the room it sits in. Part of our job is being honest about when that gesture will work and when a well-detailed alcove tub is the better result.

Tub types and materials: honest trade-offs
Alcove tubs remain the most practical choice for most bathrooms. They use three walls efficiently, they combine easily with a shower, and they are the least expensive to install well. The quality range within the category is enormous, though — a thin acrylic alcove tub and a properly reinforced one feel entirely different underfoot, and that difference is not visible in a showroom photograph.
Drop-in tubs sit inside a built platform, which allows a wider deck, a comfortable perch, and a deck-mounted filler. They suit larger rooms and are excellent when you want the tub to feel architectural rather than freestanding. The trade-off is the platform itself: it takes floor area, it must be built and waterproofed correctly, and access panels have to be planned so the plumbing remains reachable.
Freestanding tubs are the design statement, and they come in a wide weight range. Acrylic freestanding tubs are light and manageable. Solid-surface and stone-resin tubs feel substantially better, hold heat longer, and weigh considerably more when filled — which is exactly why floor structure needs checking rather than assuming. Cast iron is the traditional heavyweight, with superb heat retention and a service life measured in generations, but it demands both structural support and a realistic plan for getting it into the room.
Material affects daily experience more than most people expect. Heat retention determines whether a long soak stays warm. Surface hardness determines how the tub ages against cleaning. Weight determines both structure and installation method. And the interior geometry — depth to overflow, floor length, backrest slope — determines whether the tub is genuinely comfortable. We encourage clients to sit in a tub before buying it, fully clothed and in a showroom, because it is the only reliable test.

The process and how long it takes
As with every project we take on, it starts with an assessment visit. We look at the existing tub, the surfaces around it, the access route from the front door to the bathroom door, the position of the waste, and — where it is visible from below — the structure supporting the floor. That last point is the one that most often changes a plan, particularly when a heavy freestanding tub is under consideration.
Selections follow. Tub model, filler and valve, surround treatment, and finish all have to be settled together, because the tub determines the plumbing set-out and the filler determines where supply lines must terminate. Ordering early matters: specific tub models and finishes routinely carry multi-week lead times, and nothing stalls a bathroom like a tub that has not arrived.
On site, a like-for-like alcove tub replacement with a new surround typically takes several working days: a day for removal and inspection, a day for repairs, levelling, and setting, then surface work and finishing. A freestanding installation in an existing space is often quicker for the tub itself and slower overall, because relocating supply and waste for a specific filler position frequently means working from the ceiling below or the crawl space.

Curing times for mortar beds and waterproofing are fixed by chemistry, not effort, and any contractor who promises to skip them is telling you something useful about how they work.

What to expect during the work
The loudest part of a tub replacement is at the very start. Cutting out a cast iron tub is genuinely noisy, and it is worth planning around if someone in the house works from home or naps during the day. We can usually schedule that stage to a specific morning so it is predictable rather than a surprise.
Expect the bathroom to be out of service for the duration, and expect the water to be shut off at intervals. If it is the only full bathroom in the home, that is a real inconvenience and it should be discussed openly during planning rather than discovered mid-project. Many households handle it comfortably; some prefer to schedule the work around a trip away.
There will be moments where the room looks alarming. An open alcove with exposed framing and a bare subfloor is a normal, expected stage of the project, not a sign that something has gone wrong. What matters is that anything found at that stage is shown to you, documented, and priced before it is covered up again.
At handover, the tub should be filled and tested, not just installed. We check level, confirm the waste drains at the expected rate, verify the overflow, look at how the filler behaves at temperature, and check every junction between tub and surround. What drives the cost of a bathtub replacement
The tub itself spans an enormous range, from a straightforward acrylic alcove unit to a solid-surface freestanding piece that costs many times more. But the tub is often not the largest variable in the project. Labour, plumbing changes, and surrounding surfaces frequently outweigh it.
Plumbing position is the biggest single driver. Keeping the existing waste and supply positions keeps the job contained. Moving the drain, changing to a floor-mounted filler, or converting from a wall-mounted valve to a deck mount all require opening structure and running new lines, which means more time, more trades, and often ceiling repair in the room below.
Structure is the second. Heavy tubs may require reinforcement. Damaged subfloor must be replaced. Out-of-level or out-of-square framing — extremely common in older homes that have settled — has to be corrected so the tub sits properly and the surround meets it cleanly. None of this is visible until the old tub is out, which is exactly why an honest estimate identifies it as a possibility rather than pretending it cannot happen.
The surround finishes the number. A simple panelled surround is quick. Full-height stone or large-format slab around an alcove costs more in both material and labour, and it interacts with the tub choice: certain combinations need specific detailing at the junction to stay watertight for the long term. Access difficulty, debris removal, and any permit requirements for altered plumbing round out the picture.

Why professional installation matters
A tub is one of the few fixtures where installation quality is felt physically. A tub set on a proper bed is silent and solid. A tub set on shims over an uneven floor creaks, flexes, and eventually stresses the joint between tub and surround until it opens and lets water in. The tub is identical in both cases; the experience is not.
Drainage is the second place where craft shows. Waste and overflow assemblies are unforgiving of approximation, and a slow drain or a weeping overflow gasket is the kind of fault that gets tolerated for years while quietly damaging the floor below. Testing before closing in is not optional, and it is the step most often skipped when a job is being rushed.
The junction between tub and wall deserves particular respect. It moves — with temperature, with load, with the building itself — and it must be detailed to accommodate that movement while staying sealed. Getting that right is a matter of correct materials in the correct sequence, not a bead of sealant applied at the end.
